Rovaniemi, the 2010 UNICEF city

In 2010, Rovaniemi is the official UNICEF partner city. Children’s well-being and rights are at the core of Rovaniemi’s UNICEF year, which aims to increase awareness of UNICEF’s work and to collect aid for UNICEF.
UNICEF helped the children of Lapland after ww2. The theme of Rovaniemi’s UNICEF year is also - "Now it is our turn to help”.

The culture of the north thrives in the midnight sun of the Arctic at Jutajaiset, a many-sided forum for both northern and international arts and culture. The festival provides a stage for traditional and modern entertainment, educational events, Lapland artists, Sámi culture, and international special guests.

Korundi, ‘the star of Lapland’ selected as name for hall of the arts

The contest to name the new hall for the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland has reached a conclusion. The name ‘Korundi’ (corundum) was selected, which is the world’s second hardest mineral and is found in Lapland. Examples of it are the ruby and the sapphire. For years the project has been known in Rovaniemi by the working title ‘Taiteiden talo’ (hall of the arts).
