Santa Claus opened the Christmas season

The ground was white with snow and there was an excited atmosphere in Santa Claus’ home town. Soon Santa will celebrate the start of the Christmas season! The Christmas jollities  started on Saturday the 28 November. In the festivities was also attended by a large number of elves, residents of Rovaniemi and tourists in search of Christmas magic.

Rovaniemi the 2010 Unicef city In 2010, Rovaniemi will be the official Unicef partner city. Rovaniemi’s aim is to raise awareness in Lapland of Unicef’s work on behalf of children’s rights all over the world, and to collect aid for Unicef. 

In the post-war reconstruction of Rovaniemi, foreign aid organisations, the most important of which was UNICEF, were of great assistance. Korundi, ‘the star of Lapland’ selected as name for hall of the arts

The contest to name the new hall for the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland has reached a conclusion. The name ‘Korundi’ (corundum) was selected, which is the world’s second hardest mineral and is found in Lapland. Examples of it are the ruby and the sapphire. For years the project has been known in Rovaniemi by the working title ‘Taiteiden talo’ (hall of the arts).
